I have a few sets in their boxes. They would be the last silver I'd part with.

He has them in the nice case. That should fetch more for the set down the road.

A case is $50.

Re: Australian Lunar Silver Coins

I bought a set of 1 oz Lunar coins in 2007, including the box and shipping, for $255. The box then was $16. It has been a good investment.

Edit: I bought 40 silver Austrian Philharmonics last year and paid $22 a piece for them. So I want the OP to know that I don't want to make him feel bad. Do I wish I had paid less for my Philharmonics? Of course. But I'm glad I own them. And I believe that, at the end of the day, it won't much matter if I paid a little too much. I just pulled my Lunars out of their hiding place and admired them. Yes, they are stunningly beautiful, and the presentation case doesn't hurt a bit. The OP has something to treasure.

Yeah i may pay a bit too much at $580.
But couldn't resist the beauty of these lunar coins
Import cost from OZ not too bad fortunately

I heard the year 2000 dragon is the most sought after.. compared to other years.

Yes, enjoy the set. They are wonderful coins, the detail on the dragon is exquisite. (Besides I'm sure you could sell them in on High St Ken for double that) :s1::wavey:

Sounds like you have moved from stacking to collecting, they are evil temptations.

They are beautiful coins I have them in 1 & 2oz thanks to guys here I am now hooked & would say they are the cream of the top in coins. Only problem now is since I got my Dad started told him to get a set of both sizes. Did he listen 8 months ago when I said be quick nah what do I know? It is now going to cost him big as the 2oz snake, rabbit, horse & dragon

He was part way through collecting the 1st set & the highly valued ones snake, rabbit, horse & dragon are the prizes. I managed to get those last October after constant searching on fleabay & these went at a small premium about 20 each but I snagged the dragon & rabbit for 12.50 I am keeping these for his 65th birthday in a couple of weeks. Boy am I glad I got them as they are now fetching BIG prices some double & triple or more than I paid & I only started this metals game just before joining here when silver was at the peak. One thing I did find hard to get was the 1oz monkey & took me 8 months to get 1 to complete a set. In my view they are a solid investment so like many here will be the last to go & I doubt I would sell at least a set of each. You wont go far wrong.

I am now looking for the boxes for the sets for the 1st series & second series. I have found some 1oz 1st series boxes but non of the others anyone know where I can find them?

Funny thing is chards have the boxes but wont sell you them without the set of coins :censored: & they are not listed on their website. Maybe worth a try if you haven't started collecting the 2oz coins of either series.

Don't know if you noticed but the squiggles are bats :bear_w00t: took me a while to see what they were. Does anyone know why the bats are not on all the 1st series & only on some?

When I first read that my immediate reaction was "BS". I cropped a "squiggle" from one on my coins shots and blew it up some and-you know, you could be right, but a damned weird bat. Anyone else know what this may be other than possibly an Australian version of a Rorschach test?

I think I'll start a separate thread of this to see what people think it is. I'll make a bigger version.

Just spent ages searching and I'm still no nearer finding a definitive answer.

Searched "bats on silver lunar", apparently a common Chinese theme.

"The border design incorporates a traditional Chinese pattern of bats and clouds"

So Chinese bats have bodies that look like WWII era hand grenades? No wonder the Japanese overran them so easily, there would come a critical instant in the battle and the Chinese would lob a salvo of bats at the enemy. :bear_w00t:

Re: Australian Lunar Silver Coins

Production quality is excellent on the Australian coins I really like some of the Lunar designs, I think a more stylised less realistic rendering might have worked better for some of them, I was hoping the second series would take that route. I like the aboriginal designs on some of the new silver kangaroos although someone else put this years on the ugly coin list, my sister bought me a gilded one and I love it.

If the Lunars have competition, it is from the sister Kookaburra series, also from the Perth Mint. I have to admit that I was a little disappointed with the way the 1st series was ended, piling 3 years on top of each other almost as an afterthought.

Other than raw bullion coins like SAEs, I own more Lunars in various sizes than any other type. Though I have lots of 2's and 10's and a couple of kilos, I only have full sets in the 1 oz size.

Az Ag 05-14-2009 12:59 AM

Re: Australian Lunar Silver Coins

I too fell in love with the Lunars, and bought a set of 1's and a set of 2's and was working on getting a set of 10's. But when they pulled the 3 year-in-one stunt, I had a little snit and decided I would just buy the bare minimum to complete my sets of 1's and 2's. Now I wish I had gone ahead and gotten the 10's that I lacked (rooster, rabbit, and pig) back when they were about 15/oz because now they have about doubled. :banghead:

The Lunars are excellent coins IMO. You might have paid a lot for them but if you bought them because you like to have them, then the price you paid for them will not matter because you are happy with them. There are certain silver coins and bars that I also paid too much for but I do not reget it because I am a collector and I like what I buy and I am happy with that. I like to pay as little as possible for certain coins but sometimes that is hard to do especially when you are dealing with Lunars. The Lunars are beautiful but are very expensive IMO.

They are expensive compared to what? Look at the prices of all of the top rank national mint issued coins. By top rank, I mean Britannias, Kooks, Lunars, Pandas, Koalas, Kiwis.

I meant that it was expensive in terms of the premium over spot silver. I guess that is not really saying much since all of the top rank national mint issued coins that you mentioned have high premiums over spot silver. The fact that these top rank national mint issued coins have a huge premium over spot silver price would not stop me from buying, for example, a specific year Chinese Panda.

I mainly collect '70's silver art bars but I will buy a Panda coin because I also like Pandas and the premiums on the Pandas would not bother me.

I was thinking expensive in terms of premium over spot silver price and not in relative terms in comparison to the other top rank national mint issued coins that you mentioned.

I am sorry for not being clear on my last post. :signs14:

Re: Australian Lunar Silver Coins

People were bitching about the price over spot for lunars when I was buying dragons by the roll a couple of years ago at 18.50, when spot was real close to where it is now. Well, hey, MY silver has just about doubled since then, some more than that. How about yours, cheap-bullion-only dudes?

I've got so many lunars I'm swimming in them. Didn't get much response from my for sale postings, so they're going to APMEX. Quote is coming tomorrow and I expect to ship them out in the afternoon.

Don't worry about buying any lunars - at least some of all of them will be listed on apmex real soon. But probably not for long!

(all references to lunars are to series I, 1 oz. Included in my sale to APMEX will be 3 sets in the red box, with the cardboard wrap it came in.)

BTW, commenters should also realize OP is in the UK. I think silver may cost more there, based on things I have read. Charges of 'overpaying' may be incorrect.

I don't think so: the coin is the same.
As far as I know, the red package was the one used in year 2000, when the coin was first sold.
The wooden case (I own this one) is just the same presentation box used for all the other coins of the diamond-eyes series, and I think it has been used when the Perth Mint sold the coin in later years.
